A habit tracking app to encourage you boost your fruit intake. Increase the amount of fruit you eat every day by learning about nutrition, track it and earn rewards!
Briefing: design a habit tracking app, by interviewing a minimum of 5 subjects, conducting a user research and finding a potential problem. Then, designing and testing a product that helps the users to implement or quit a habit, and tracks the process
Scope: the app must have 1 main feature (that targets that problem) and optionally might have more if they are justified
The interview started with the question:
– Tell me the last time you had your favorite food.
Generally, people’s favorite foods aren’t the healthiest, they are popular because they are high in sugar, salt or fat, And the interviewees were aware of this, so after this first question, a follow up was made by:
– How often do you eat it?
And Why?
and then, they started talking about their health concerns.
Starting from the foods they like, but only eat occasionally, the questions started digging deeper into their everyday food habits like
– Mention dishes that you usually eat in the week days.
– Do you plan these meals in any specific way?
Until the amount of information given was enough to ask:
– Are you happy about these habits? and Is there anything you would like to change?
5/5 eat unhealthy food
when eating out
4/5 drink alcohol in the
weekends or when eating out
5/5 say they should eat
more fruits & veggies
4/5 worry about their nutrition habits
From the interviews, 3 common problems were spotted in most part of the interviewees’ habits.
Not eating enough
fruits & veggies
Drinking alcohol
in the weekends
Eating unhealthy food
when eating out
From these 3 main problems found in the research, I decided to work on #1 Not eating enough fruits & veggies because the other 2 were strictly linked to their social habits and how they spend their free time, and they didn’t want to change those at all.
The main reasons the interviewees gave for not eating enough fruits & veggies, were:
. They simply forget
. They get rotten because they don’t remember to eat them
. They don’t have time to cook (and the options they find, don’t have veggies/fruits)
. They don’t have the habit of eating them, and don’t even think about them when planning meals
From the main problem, I narrowed it down even more by picking only to work on fruit intake because it is begginer friendly: fruits don’t require any cooking, can be eaten raw (so there’s no need to plan ahead) and can easily substitute one whole meal (like a snack) or a part of it (a dessert, or part of a breakfast).
People between 30 and 36 years old, who have busy lives, are aware of the low fruit intake in their diets. They feel unable to improve it because either they just forget them in the fridge, don’t even have this habit in their everyday life or have no time for cooking and find no alternatives.
By designing EatFruit, we will help them create the habit by sending notifications (if they choose so), prove them that eating fruits requires no extra time or cooking at all, educate them about the specific benefits of each fruit & engage them by giving them rewards and tracking their progress.

1. Definitely, interviewing 10 people is not enough, it would have been great to have a wider variety of profiles and get more information, but it wasn’t possible due to time.
2. When having to deal with so many colors it is extremely important to be as minimalistic as possible with the UI elements, to let the colors and pictures shine, without feeling the interface is cluttered.
3. Probably, from the technical perspective, one of the hardest parts of this app would be to create the API with the list of all the fruits that should be included. A deep research should be done about the fruits, if we want this app to be used in many countries around the world.
1. Creating a section about seasonal fruits, to inspire and inform the user about those fruits that are in the optimal conditions and climate conscious, depending on their area and season.
2. Ask users to include their picture in the registration process, so the weekly rewards could be personalized, like stickers with their picture.
